Public Health Sudbury and Districts
The importance of being prepared

Since March, recent events such as record snowfall, flooding, and boil and drinking water advisories have caused disruptions that highlight the importance of being prepared. Public Health Sudbury & Districts recognizes the challenges these events have created for residents and businesses, and thanks the community for its cooperation and resilience. These experiences reinforce that preparedness, collaboration, and public awareness are essential to protecting the health and safety of communities in any situation.

Having an emergency plan is an important step to help your family know what to do in an emergency. You can create a plan in about 20 minutes using the Government of Canada’s online resource.

Public Health also encourages everyone to practise being safe and prepared before an emergency by building an emergency 72-hour kit. The kit should have items that you and your family would need to be safe and take care of yourselves in a stay-at-home emergency or an evacuation.

The 72-hour kit should include a supply of drinking water, non-perishable food, prescriptions, cash, a radio, flashlight and spare batteries, as well as other needed items. Information about storing bottled water is available from the Government of Canada’s Frequently Asked Questions about Bottled Water.
