Soo Man with Hydrocephalus Leads Troy's Trail Walk June 28

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON: Celebrate National Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Awareness Month at the 3rd Annual Troy's Trail Spirit Wheel Walk Run (SWWR) at Clergue Park Boardwalk this Saturday, June 28.

Troy and Annette Chandler started the SWWR, benefiting the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario, to reach out to local residents and share their journey since Troy was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at age 28. "The walk was started to create awareness about this condition," said Troy in a media report. "And if we could reach a couple of new people every year that live with this, that would be great. We want people to know that we’re here, that we’re a support system. They can send us an email, pick up the phone or we can get together for coffee...We don’t want anyone to feel like they have to go through this alone like we did. We're still living this life right now, but we’ve been through everything. Now we want to pay if forward.”

Donations to Troy's Trail will be used for SB&H programs that support families across Ontario and increase awareness of these complex, lifelong neurological conditions. Read more about Troy's experience with hydrocephalus, where excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, in the Local2 - Sault Ste. Marie report, "Hydrocephalus and Happily Ever After" at http://www.sbhao.on.ca/stories/personal-stories/hydrocephalus-and-happily-ever-after.

Troy's Trail is part of the 7th Annual Ontario-wide SWWR, a one-of-a-kind grassroots event where families living with the challenges of spina bifida and hydrocephalus (sb/h) raise awareness of the conditions at the local level. Individuals customize their own walk, wheel or run in their community and raise pledges for Association programs and services. SB&H is the only organization in the province providing support and comprehensive information to thousands of parents, youth and adults living with sb/h. The 2014 SWWR is generously sponsored by O.O.S. Medical. This unique fundraiser has inspired individuals with different levels of ability from across Ontario. Whether they wheel walk or run, this tailored fundraiser allows participants to contribute in whatever way they can. .

About Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus
Spina bifida is the number one permanently disabling birth defect in Canada. One in 1,300 babies is born with spina bifida and even more have hydrocephalus. In Canada, hydrocephalus is the number one cause for brain surgery in babies. SB&H relies on donations from individuals, community groups, corporations, foundations and fundraising events. These funds are critical to the Association's ability to provide vital programs and services as SB&H receives no government funding. To learn more, visit www.sbhao.on.ca.
